Repairing
Your Credit Report - Part One -
Like
thousands of other consumers, your credit report may be less than
perfect. It may even be flat out bad and not you want to know how
to clean it up.
Contrary
to some claims out there, there is no quick-fix solution to your less
than perfect credit history. You can’t hide late payments or charge-offs.
But with some persistence and discipline, you can improve your credit
sooner than you think.
There
are many companies and services out there that claim they can make negative
marks of your credit report disappear or help you create an entirely
new credit history.
Most of these services are illegal and could cause you to commit a crime
unknowingly.
These so called “credit repair services” claim that bankruptcy
or negative marks on your credit report will make it impossible for
you to obtain credit in the future. It is true, a poor credit history
will affect your ability to obtain new credit, but there are many different
options for consumers who are trying to rebuild a positive credit report.
Keep in mind, there’s nothing any company out there can legally
do to help you improve your credit rating that you can’t easily
do yourself for free.
Your
first step should be to obtain a copy of your credit report. This can
be done via the three credit bureaus, (Equifax, Experian and Trans Union).
If
you are currently overwhelmed by your debts and can not keep up with
your payments, you may choose to join a credit counseling or debt consolidation
type program.
A credit counselor will help you create a doable budget while also contacting
your creditors to try to obtain better repayment terms for your accounts.
